Discipleship Hour

Sunday mornings, from 8:45–9:45 AM, everyone aged two years and above is invited to plug into a class. For those aged 7th grade to adult, a few electives are usually available on a variety of meaty and encouraging topics. Learn about the SCBC Education Plan for a description of the scope and aims of our adult electives.

Winter Adult Electives (beginning January 14, 2018):

Hermeneutics: The Art & Science of Bible Interpretation

Herman who?? “Hermeneutics” is the ten-dollar word describing principles of Bible interpretation. But why do we need a class on it? Many of us have come to a Bible passage asking the question “What does this mean for me?” Before we can know that, though, we must ask, “What does it mean? Period.” In this class, Pastor Curtis will teach the art and science of Bible interpretation so that each of us can rightly and confidently apply the Scriptures to our daily lives. Class is open to 7th grade and up and meets Sundays at 8:45 AM. Sign up in the foyer.

Ready to Defend: Introduction to Apologetics

Scriptural authority, indwelling sin, the resurrection, suffering and evil, Christianity versus other religions…are you prepared to dialogue on these issues with unbelievers in a clear and  rational way? This is the task of Christian apologetics, and the subject of our study with Pastor Mark this quarter in our second adult elective, “Ready to Defend” (on Sundays at 8:45). Dig into answers that will equip you to share the reason for your hope and bolster your own assurance in the One who really needs no defending at all. Sign up in foyer.

Children’s Classes

Kids in grades K-4 will be taught from the Answers Bible Curriculum, which covers the entire Bible chronologically and provides a thorough understanding of the authority and primary teachings of Scripture. All ages will be equipped to defend the Bible and become conformed to the image of Christ as they apply God’s Word to their lives. Concepts include the trustworthiness of Scripture, the attributes of God, His plan of redemption, apologetics, and more! 5th and 6th graders will work through a special curriculum preparing them to jump into adult classes from 7th grade on. Contact Rob Freeman for more info on these classes.

Essential Truths

During the Fall 2017 quarter, we are introducing a special transitions class for children preparing to move into adult electives. “Essential Truths” follows our 5th & 6th grade class, but is open to any kids ready for the next step in Discipleship Hour, as it will utilize catechism-based instruction to give kids a foundational understanding of the major doctrines that form our adult Education Plan. Placement into this class is entirely at the parents’ discretion and they are welcome to come and take in the material with their kids on Sundays at 8:45 AM. Contact John K. for more info.
