The Elders The elders provide loving leadership and oversight of the church.

Steve Balvanz

Senior Pastor

Steve and his wife Maureen have six children and five grandsons, who could win World Champion for their cuteness. Steve’s home flock is the delight of his heart, and hanging out with them and doing all things sports is what he enjoys in his free time. His life purpose is to grow in his love and joy in Jesus Christ and to live his life in obedience to God’s Word while helping others to do the same. His passion is to preach God’s Word in an accurate and applicable manner. He possesses a deep affection for the doctrines of grace, as well as learning how the gospel applies to every facet of life. He is committed to cultivating a cross-generational, family-friendly body of believers. He has shepherded our church family for over thirty years and is a 1986 graduate of Prairie Bible Institute.

Rob Freeman

Rob Freeman is a long-time Bellinghamster and enjoys Whatcom County life with his wife Tina and their three daughters. He works for the School District as an Information Technology Specialist, oversees our children’s Discipleship Hour, and serves our flock in numerous other ministries and ways. He enjoys spending time with his family, walking with his wife, doing house remodel projects, and using technology. Rob is a blessing to the SCBC family as he is one of those guys quite able to spin multiple plates and not break any of the fine china.

Gary Jordan

Gary Jordan grew up in a Christian home and came to a saving knowledge of Christ early in life. Gary has degrees in engineering and business and has worked in engineering and management roles in manufacturing and education. An elder since 2004, Gary desires to help people think biblically. If one word could define him, it would be “encourager”. An additional significant role Gary plays at SCBC is chairing the church Budget Committee. He and his wife Susan have two grown sons, two sweet daughters-in-law, and four adorable grandsons, providing constant sources of joy and smiles.

Andrew Larsen

Executive Pastor

Andrew, born and raised in Whatcom County, studied for his M.Div. at The Master’s Seminary and was thrilled to return to Spring Creek Bible Church as an associate pastor in 2018. One of Andrew’s passions is watching God’s Word transform His people from the inside out through teaching and Biblical counseling, beginning with his own heart. He loves to make his wife, Abigail, laugh, and spends many hours reading to and wrestling with their three little boys.

Mark Lind

Education Pastor

Mark is a Fargo, North Dakota native that came to the northwest to attend Trinity Western University in the late 1980’s. In the early 1990’s he discovered Silver Beach Community Church and has been richly blessed by this church family ever since, not the least of which is the blessing of his wife Christine whom he met through SBCC. After many years in the field of radio, he attended The Master’s Seminary in Los Angeles where he was also blessed to be employed by the Grace to You radio ministry. In 2007 Mark graduated and was thrilled to be “brought home” that same year as an Associate Pastor for Spring Creek. Mark and his wife Christine love raising their six busy children.

Curtis Tyler

Member Care Pastor

Curtis is a recent import to the northwest by way of California, having also lived a good number of years in the Vancouver, BC area. It was while in Vancouver that he met his wife, Christa, and the two were married in 2002. After spending fifteen years in the transportation industry and serving the local church as a layman, Curtis left Canada to attend The Master’s Seminary in Los Angeles. He graduated in December of 2016 and was called to serve as an associate pastor at Spring Creek. He has a passion for home bible studies and seeing people’s lives changed as they become captivated by Christ through the Scriptures. Curtis likes hockey, hunting, family road trips, and working on cars. He and Christa have five children.

The Deacons The deacons provide oversight of the ministries of the church.

Grant Beld

Deacon of Welcoming

Grant and his wife Shelly now have a combined total of 6 grandkids from their five daughters. Brenna and Taylor are their lone remaining nest-dwellers. Grant has sold many a big piece of equipment in his profession, but nothing is bigger than the smile and laugh he has for everyone he meets. Shoot, if you visit SCBC Grant will be ready to welcome you like few others can. He’s just the kind of guy to make you feel at home, which we hope you do.

Dan Eschbach

Deacon of Hospitality

Born in Minnesota in 1957 and born again in 1982, Dan has called Washington home since 1961. Dan married Barbara in 1983 and started a family that has blessed many for many years. They have three grown sons all making their home in NW Washington, which keeps their three grandchildren nice and close as well. Dan has served as a chiropractor in Bellingham since 1988 and been a member of this church body since 1993. Numerous aspects of SCBC’s hospitality and assimilation ministry fall under Dan’s faithful oversight. Dan and Barb are also secret agents of godly encouragement and smiles within the SCBC family.

Randy VanderHeiden

Deacon of Security

Randy and Carolyn have five kids, two of whom came home to them from Haiti. Randy grew up in Everson but was actually born in the motherland of Germany. He serves SCBC in a number of ways, security being just one dimension. Many have also been blessed by his teaching and example. Nicknamed “Rescue Randy,” he works with the local fire department and after many years fairly tied to a desk is enjoying the adventure of the medical side out in the community once again. Relaxed moments for this outdoorsman are often filled with preparing his gear and planning his outings, playing the handy man, and leading his family.

The Staff Our administrative staff is the glue that makes Spring Creek what it is.

Lead Secretary

Annie counts graphic design work, event planning, and interacting with people among her very favorite job duties. She loves cuddling babies, connecting with friends, laughing with her husband, and reading books that spiritually challenge her. She’s also a big fan of sunny weather, thought-provoking singer-songwriter lyrics, and anything rose or lavender-flavored.

Andrea is a Honduran girl married to a Tennessee boy, now happily making a home together in the PNW. She grew up as a missionary kid in Costa Rica and loves traveling the far corners of the globe now to keep up with family and friends. In her spare time, Andrea enjoys explorations and adventures with her husband, sniffing out a good cup of coffee, reading, and designing children’s illustrations.
